FIRST Robotics Competition, Pacific Northwest
March 25, 2005 11:57 AMbyAfter hearing Dean Kamen talk about FIRST at Autodesk University, I was inspired to volunteer at the regional competition in Portland, Oregon. I wasn't alone, for many of my colleagues at Autodesk including developers, product designers, QA engineers, project managers along with local manufacturers and parents lending their time. I don't think I can say it any better than Dean, but I know that this engineer is hooked for life as a volunteer for FIRST.
"...to create a world where science and technology are celebrated... where young people dream of becoming science and technology heroes..."
- Dean Kamen, FIRST Founder
Here are some highlights:
Celebrating Victory
Robots in action on the field
FIRST Volunteer Awards go to: (Congratulations!)
- Mike Geyer, Application Engineer - Inventor
- Peter Maxfield, Product Designer - Inventor
I was amazed to see the excitement in the eyes of students as they highlighted features about their robots. As a robot inspector, I probed their designs validating components, controls & wiring, pneumatics & hydraulics, and safety concerns under tournament rules. These high school students really knew what they were talking about and often had a specialist who would talk in depth about their area of the robot. I am also pleased with the praise these students had for Inventor as their design system.
Next step for me: Coax my kids to sign up for their school's FIRST project.
Cheers,
-Andy

Beta Update and Beta Challenge Winners!
March 18, 2005 11:25 AMbyThe Inventor eBeta is winding down and it's been the best beta yet. We've had over 850 participants and over 4,000 postings to the discussion forums. We've polled these users and 98.3% would recommend Inventor to their friends and colleagues.
We want to extend our thanks to everyone who helped make the beta so successful. This time we also offered prizes to those users who contributed the most to make the Beta successful.
- The winners of Apple iPods are; Charles Bliss, and Chris Ludtke
- The Space Traveler winners are; Jan Terpstra, JD Mather, Neil Munro, Kent Keller, Eric Rolland, Leo Laimer, Shawn Stuckey and Walter Holzwrath
Again thanks to all contributors, you helped us improve the world's best selling 3D Design software. We couldn't do it without you.
Now that we can talk freely about the new features, we'll be posting more info to the blog in the next few weeks.

Buzz on Functional Design
March 18, 2005 10:34 AMbyFunctional Design is a big part of Inventor 10. Buzz Kross (VP of our division) published a recent article in Desktop Engineering that talks about design based on what a product actually does, rather than based on its geometry and features.

Must See TV
March 16, 2005 04:46 PMbyAutoCAD on Friday Night's Monster House
Autodesk recently participated in an episode of the Discovery Channel's reality show Monster House, airing Friday, March 18, 8:00 PST.
In this particular episode, a team of student builders work for one week to renovate their dilapidated high school wood shop classroom, transforming it into their new "Construction Technology Shop." Autodesk contributed to this unique project by donating several seats of AutoCAD software to the students.
Check your local listings for Discovery channel and exact timing. The segment will be repeated several times during the week if you miss it Friday.

Portfolio of Market-Leading Manufacturing Products
Autodesk's comprehensive solution, which helps customers create, manage and share design data across the manufacturing organization, includes the following highlights:
Create
· Autodesk Inventor Series 10 includes new components of Functional Design Design Accelerator and Feature Generator" that help existing users improve design efficiency, and new users transition to 3D more easily. In addition, Inventor Studio provides state-of-the-art rendering and animation capabilities for quickly creating photorealistic designs.
· Autodesk Inventor Professional 10 provides all of the benefits of Autodesk Inventor Series, plus specialized design capabilities to create routed systems with tube and pipe or wire and cable. Customers can now create deflection animations of their finite element analysis (FEA) models.
· AutoCAD Mechanical 2006, purpose-built for mechanical engineers, now allows users to document 3D Inventor assemblies as well as 3D parts. It also includes new workflow enhancements that allow customers to manage hidden lines more quickly and intuitively.
· AutoCAD Electrical 2006, specifically developed for electrical engineers and control systems designers, now provides direct integration with Autodesk Vault and includes new data migration tools that allow customers to easily convert legacy AutoCAD or other electrical design applications into intelligent AutoCAD Electrical designs.
Manage
· Autodesk Vault 4, integrated into all Autodesk manufacturing design products, now makes managing design data even easier by automatically creating a Design Web Format (DWF) file for each file checked into Autodesk Vault, and saves hours of time with the new intelligent copy functionality. In addition, integration with Microsoft Office applications allows users to access files stored in Autodesk Vault from directly within Microsoft Office, improving communication with non-engineering team members.
· Autodesk Productstream 4 allows customers to automate the engineering release process, with tools to manage Bill of Materials (BOM), create automated ECO workflows, and integrate with ERP/MRP systems for improved sharing of design information with extended teams for planning, inventory, and accounting purposes.

Big A, Little A
March 15, 2005 05:47 PMbySorry we've been so quiet here in Inventor land.... there has been a lot going on - some that we are involved with and some that we can enjoy from afar.
You'll be happy to know (I hope) that we are about to release new versions of Inventor and Inventor Professional and we've got lots of useful info to get to you via the blog. So forgive us for going dark while pushing this release out the door!
Autodesk has also gone through a rebranding and it is pretty cool. If you visit Autodesk.com you'll notice right away we are back to a capital A in the logo and have a great new tag line - Ideas. Realized. Your ideas that is!
Stay tuned for lots more on the new releases.
