AliasStudio Success Story: Magna Steyr
October 30, 2006 01:59 PMbyCheck out this recent success story from Magna Steyr. They used Autodesk AliasStudio to create a concept car that is ecologically friendly, all weather and sporty. The MILA (Magna Innovative Lightweight Auto) concept car began as an idea in the design studio then quickly developed over the months into a full-fledged road-ready prototype.

Did you know that if you own a car you own a product designed with Alias products? Or if you own an iPod or a Razor phone. The list goes on ... Harley Davidson motorcycles, Blackberrys and Legos were all designed with Alias as well. Alias has been part of Autodesk for over 6 months and nicely rounds out the manufacturing solution to include conceptual design.

Global Illumination
October 26, 2006 02:45 PMby Garin GardinerOne of our Product Designers (Bill Bogan) sent over a few settings for Inventor Studio that will allow you to make realistic lights without too much effort. If you would like to have shadows on the ground like the image below, you will need to create an object (like a box) that can receive a shadow.

1. Create a new light style.
2. Disable or delete all lights of the newly created style.
3. Style General tab set the controls as follows.
a. Brightness = 80
b. Enable Sky Light
c. Intensity = 90
4. Illumination tab, set the controls as follows:
a. Ambience = 40
b. Bounced Light Quality = Medium
5. Shadows tab, set the controls as follows:
a. Turn on Soft Shadows
b. Highest quality
c. Density = 80
6. Make the style the active one, save the style, and I suggest you save it to the library as you will likely want to use it or a derivative later.
7. If you want a subtle white/gray back ground, create a scene style to your liking.
8. Click the render command. In the dialog set the controls as follows:
a. Use the new lighting and scene styles as appropriate.
b. High Anti-aliasing
c. True Reflections
9. Render the scene

Autodesk Northeast 2006
October 13, 2006 02:27 PMbyLast week I went to Boston to speak at Autodesk Northeast. This is a one day event sponsored by our reseller M2 Technologies (www.m2t.com) that offers an agenda full of learning opportunities and plenty of time to network. I kicked off the event with a presentation on our Functional Design vision and also a sneak peek at some really interesting DWG interoperability capability we've been developing called DWG TrueConnect. There were over 90 users in attendance. They've given me permission to post some of the handouts from their breakout sessions. These are an awesome collection of tips, tricks and best practices that the M2 AE's created:
* Inventor Studio
* Tips & Tricks for Inventor 11
* Complex Shape Description
* Dynamic Simulation and FEA
* Model Tolerances
* Demystifying Project Files
(note, a few of these files are over 1Meg so they may take a minute to download.)
Also, here are links to a few recent articles on Functional Design and our new DWG Technology by Martyn Day and Kenneth Wong. Stay tuned for more info on DWG TrueConnect ...
Enjoy! Amy
