Open Profiles in Inventor
November 26, 2007 01:46 PMby Garin GardinerMany of us ore off to Autodesk University this week but I thought I would add a quick post holiday tip. If you won't be at AU this week stay tuned - I will be trying to post a few times throughout the week on what is going on this year.
Inventor supports the use of open profiles which can often result in faster creation of features as well as survive large topology changes that would often require clean-up with closed profiles. Take a look at the following image and notice we are using a rectangular base extrusion with a shell and a step inside. We also have a sketch that we want to use to add an additional extrusion although the lines don’t terminate at the base extrusion walls.
With the extrusion tool I will you can select the open profile and select the direction you want the profile to fill.
We might have a need to change the base shape from a rectangle to a circle. From past experience we all know this would require some clean-up with a closed profile since the base shape has changed. Since we created this with an open profile we can easily change the base shape without the need to re-define the additional features.

Custom Profiles in Frame Generator

Hot from our developers hands is a great little tool that allows you to create custom profiles for Frame Generator assemblies.
This has been one of our most requested features recently and due to Autodesk Labs we can easily share great tools like this to get feedback as well as offer extended functionality to our Inventor users. For those of you that have a need to create custom profiles, head on over to the labs site and try it out.

Designing Shafts

I am guessing that most of you at some point create shafts or cylindrical parts that require complex profiles to revolve or several extrusions to create the shaft. As many of you have probably discovered, when it comes time to create holes on a cylindrical face, it often requires creating several work features such as planes, axis and points to get the location of the holes.
As some of you probably already know, Inventor has a shaft tool that removes many of these steps and allows you to create shaft with various cross sections such as cylinders, cones and polygons. You can also place various features such as holes, chamfers, fillets, reliefs, wrenches, grooves and keyways to name a few.
With just a few section you can create sfafts similar to this very easy and even run calculations on the shaft by adding a few supports and forces.
If you haven't used the shaft generator head on over to the Design Accelerator panel bar and take it for a spin.

Autodesk on CCNTV
November 5, 2007 05:48 AMby Garin GardinerThe first week of October, the Manufacturing division inside of Autodesk held a worldwide press event where we had just over 80 members of the press attend a Manufacturing Summit in Paris France. We spent a great deal of the time talking about our Digital Prototyping strategy as well as a 90 minute presentation where we had seven pods set up where everybody was able to see a project start in its ideation phase then get passed to mechanical and electrical engineering then off to building layout and finally the creation of marketing material. Of course we used our data manageent software to help out the process as well.
CCNTV was in attendance and reported on the event in their latest video podcast. Four minutes into the podcast they show some great clips as well as a few interviews from the event. If you have a few minutes go you and take a look you might even see a few shots of new technology that you havent seen before.
