Skeleton Tolerence
December 22, 2007 03:44 PMby Garin Gardiner
The other day I ran into a customer that needed to create a skeleton sketch to drive the entire assembly (single sketch layout that controls entire model). They designe wood furniture and wanted to easily layout new projects like dressers although they didn't want to have to build in all the tolerances for the dresser drawers to be able to slide in and out easily. By using the Thicken/Offset feature in the part environment we were able to get create a simple skeleton sketch then add the tolerance to the components that need it later while still keeping everything tied to one sketch.
To set this up I created a very simple sketch as an example of how you can use this.

I then created an assembly with several blank parts all tied to the origin. I then derived in the sketch to each part and extruded the portion I wanted for each part.

The only problem with this is that the door is a tight press fit and we need at least .0625 around the door to be able to open and close it easily. This is where I used the Thicken/Offset tool to add that tolerance all the way around my door.

Notice that there is now plenty of room around the entire cabinet for the door to open and close. My model is still completely tied to that original sketch so any changes it will still update my model.

If you would like to learn a little more about skeleton modeling, below is a great tutorial about setting them up by Neil Munro.
Hope you all have a great Holiday Season. See you next year!

Everything You Need to Know About Autodesk Inventor Styles
December 10, 2007 06:11 PMby Garin Gardiner
Shortly after Autodesk University, I received an outline from a styles class that was presented by Andrew Faix. Andrew is a Product Designer for Inventor and works primarily in the drawing environment. Who better to teach a class about style than Andrew. In case you weren't able to attend AU or his class, here is his outline that has a great deal of useful information for both novice and expert users.
I would like to thank Andrew for the great material and I hope many of you find useful information in it. You can download it by selecting here.

New World Speed Record
December 7, 2007 01:25 PMby Garin Gardiner
Take a look at this interview with Russ Wicks shortly after he broke the world speed record (again) in a new stock car. Russ broke his own record October 9, 2007 when he reached a speed of 247 MPH in the SASCAR-spec Autodesk Dodge Charger on the Bonneville Salt Flats. Keep an eye on this guy over the next few years - he has a few things up his sleeves.

Inventor 2008 Service Pack 2 Now Live
December 3, 2007 05:14 PMby Garin Gardiner
Last week service pack 2 for Inventor 2008 went live while we were all playing around in Las Vegas at Autodesk University. If you are running Inventor 2008 head on over the the download page and pull down SP2. You will need to have SP1 already installed so if you haven't pulled it down yet either, install SP1 then SP2.
There is a readme doc that has detail for all the changes so if you are wanting to see if a specific issue is fixed pull it down as well.
Enjoy!
