  • Microsoft update and Inventor text
    February 28, 2007 12:51 AMby Garin Gardiner

It looks like Microsoft released an update that will no longer allow Inventor to create or edit text. After applying this Microsoft security update, you can no longer create or edit text objects in Inventor drawings. Presently the work around is to un-install the Microsoft update. We are working on a solution and hope to have a hhotfix posted by the end of the week .

Here are some of the details:

MS security update KB918118 causes the rich edit text control used for creating and editing text objects in Inventor to discard all input resulting in an empty text string. A hotfix for this issue should be available for download on March 2, 2007. The hotfix will be available for the following versions of Inventor:

    R11SP2
    R11 DWF Extension SP2
    R10 SP3a
    R9 SP4

The hotfix should be available at the following locations - just select the version of Inventor you presently have installed.

  • Inventor 2008 Countdown - DWG TrueConnect #2
    February 27, 2007 02:00 PMby Garin Gardiner

    countdown (Custom).bmp

DWG TrueConnect provides enormous benefit to those that need to communicate engineering data in the DWG format. But it’s much, much more than that. Here is a workflow that illustrates innovative solutions made possible by this Autodesk technology. Cost savings for companies that need to update 2D designs using 3D
There are many companies that must maintain large capital equipment for ten, twenty, sometimes thirty years. Often this involves mid-life upgrades to replace outdated components, reduce operating costs or meet new environmental regulations.

    cab.png

Until now, companies in this position were faced with a difficult problem – how do you use modern 3D design processes and still control the costs of updating all the manufacturing and maintenance documentation. Autodesk Inventor addresses the problem directly with DWG TrueConnect. You will now be able to redesign subassemblies using Autodesk Inventor 2008 and then integrate the new drawing views directly into the original AutoCAD drawings.

  • Bosch Rexroth makes the move to 3D with Autodesk Inventor
    February 26, 2007 11:07 AMby Garin Gardiner

I had a chance to meet a few of our good friends at Bosch Rexroth last year at Autodesk University so I was excited to see one of our latest success stories on them show up the other day. Bosch Rexroth is a worldwide leader in drive-and-control solutions and recently standardized on Autodesk Manufacturing software.

Bosch Rexroth has implemented a wide range of Autodesk tools from Inventor to Productstream and AutoCAD Electrical allowing them to make changes 50% faster with fewer errors. Bob Van Vliet (Assembly Shop Manager) of Bosch Rexroth said it best when he stating “Instead of having to look at a flat drawing and try to picture in your mind where you may have potential problems, it’s right there in front of you.”

If you are interested in reading more about their transition, take a look at their success story by clicking on the following link.

  • Inventor 2008 Countdown
    February 23, 2007 06:31 AMby Garin Gardiner

    countdown (Custom).bmp

With Autodesk Inventor 2008 around the corner, its a good time to start posting new features such as the new DWG TrueConnect.

Have you ever wanted to natively save Inventor drawings as DWG files?

With Inventor 2008, you will be able to save your drawings as DWG files by simply changing the default file type for drawings to DWG. You can view, plot and measure the data in either system. For edits you simply link back to the system that created the data.

    TConnect (Custom).bmp

This is big news for two important reasons:

First, DWG TrueConnect is built using 100% Autodesk technology to provide DWG output with unrivaled fidelity. You no longer have to bother with translators and the additional time and effort required to make sure the translator produced the correct output. With DWG TrueConnect, what you see in your Inventor drawings is what your supplier will see when they open it in AutoCAD. It’s that simple.

Second, DWG TrueConnect provides full associativity with the 3D model, so DWG files created using Inventor will automatically update when changes are made to the model. The translator based solutions used by our competitors can not deliver this essential requirement.

Stay tuned for more to come.

  • The Joy of Rental Cars
    February 23, 2007 12:21 AMby

(Warning, this post is very far off topic!)

I am out on the west coast now with our reseller KETIV Technologies presenting Inventor 2008 at a few user group meetings in the LA area. It’s my 3rd trip in 2 weeks and I’m getting a little cranky. Last week in Boston, during the aftermath of a snow storm, Hertz ‘upgraded’ me to a cherry red 2 door Ford Mustang – just what I needed – a muscle car to be driving around in snow and ice! This week they did it to me again! Only this time it is a convertible and to add insult to injury, it is actually raining here in Southern California!

While I have a lot in common with many of my Autodesk colleagues, a love of cars is something I do not share with them…. Give me a nice Mom car any day and I’ll be happy. I am clearly not the target market for the Mustang – I can barely see out of the darn thing. If you could see me you would surely have a good laugh.

Now, back to your regularly scheduled CAD program. -Amy

  • Autodesk and Inventor in the News
    February 23, 2007 12:05 AMby

These just came across my desk...

An Interview with Carl Bass on CNN (once you get past the commercials!) that highlights some Inventor Video footage.

Also hot off the presses is some commentary from the UK on our new 2008 releases.

    Enjoy! -Amy

Curious to see what is new in Inventor 2008? We'll post a lot of details here over the next few weeks, but if you can't wait you can download our comprehensive What's New document. There are also lots of little quality of life improvements that you'll find as you start to use 2008 -but you'll have to wait till April for that!

    Enjoy!

  • World Press Day 2008
    February 15, 2007 06:33 AMby

We've been a bit sporadic in our posts lately.... that is because we've been heads down getting ready for launch and traveling all over the world training our AEs. On Monday we announced the new products and I spent the last 2 days in San Franscisco entertaining over 100 memebers of the press at our World Press Day event. We had displays of customer products and demo stations set up. I only had 30 minutes to present what was new in all our manufacturing products. This was no where near close to enough time!! Eventhough the products aren't shipping for a little while yet,we are able to talk freely about what will be in Inventor 2008. And in case you noticed we switched to the year naming convention that AutoCAD uses.

So get ready, we've got a lot to talk about. And I think you are going to like what you hear.

  • Mirror Feature
    February 13, 2007 06:15 AMby Garin Gardiner

    Maglev Train

Last week I had a chance to go to China for my fist time and had a great time. One of the most exciting experiences I had while there was taking the Maglev train to the airport. This thing goes goes over 400 km/h or over 250 mph!

    Maglev.JPG

Now let’s get onto something useful in the Inventor World.

    Mirror Body

If you design symmetrical parts often there is a nice little technique I often use to see the end results even though I am only designing half of the part. Sketch half of the first feature and extrude, revolve, sweep or loft it. You can then use the mirror feature and be sure to select the “Mirror the entire body” option and select the mirror plane.

    mirror.png

Now before you add your next feature/s roll the End of Part (EOP) marker above the mirror feature. Add additional features to the part and periodically you can roll the EOP bellow the mirror feature to see the ending results.

    mirror2.png

This is a great way to analyze mass, area and volume of a symmetrical part that you are designing without too much effort.

    Enjoy!
