Autodesk Inventor 2008 Tube and Pipe Skill Builder
May 22, 2007 02:51 PMby Garin Gardiner
If you have created pipe runs previous to Inventor 2008, the following skill builder will help you update your pipe styles to include data for Flanged and Butt Welded runs. Any new pipe runs will already include the new style information - this is only necessary for legacy pipe runs.

Decals Make Things Look Better
May 17, 2007 10:00 AMby Garin Gardiner
Have you ever wanted to spruce up your models a little by adding decals? Adding a few strategically placed decals can make your designs look much better if you need to present your model to others?

1 - Open Part
First open the model you would like to add a decal to such as the electric motor I am working with.

2 - Locate Image
Locate an image you would like to add to the part similar to the image below.

3 Place Image
Create a sketch on a face or work plane and from the sketch panel bar select Insert Image and position it where you would like it.

4 Add Decal Feature
Now we need to tell the decal to wrap to the models surfaces. To do this return up a level out of the sketch and select the decal tool from the part panel bar. Select the image you have just inserted and the face you would like to wrap it to (I will select the cylinder). For my design I will use the wrap to face option so it will wrap it around similar to wrapping a sticker around my part (not projecting the image to the surface).

5 - Add Transparency
Notice how my decal image has an ugly green background. This was intentional for the next step. For the final result I would like to mask the image so it doesnt show any of the green area. To do this I need to edit the sketch the image is contained in and right click on the image from the browser and select properties. You will now see an option to turn on masking to turn off the green color (transparency color is the color of the lower right pixel of the image).

6 Final Design
One you have turned on the mask return out of the sketch and you will notice the image no longer displays the green background.

Enjoy!

Designing with Parametric Sketches
May 15, 2007 02:51 PMby Garin Gardiner
Cory McConnell put together great white paper on parametric sketches. For those of you that are fairly new to Inventor, it is a great tool to show you what parametric sketches are as well as using things like equations to set up relationships. He even goes so far as showing how to assembly 2D sketches to test motion in assemblies before you even need to create 3D parts.

Happy Sketching!
