Dear Kevin, In the past I created various flat contour and grooved cams in 2D-CAD: #1 Make cam curve characteristics in MathCAD-file (for example 850 XY-points) and drop down in an Excel-file. #2 From this Excel-file, make spline profiles in .dxf (with VBA-scripts in AutoCAD) and integrate in a 2D-cam model design. My question: On which way can I create 3D barrel cams in Inventor 10, from spline coordinates in Excel files? I mean, how to make special grooved profiles in cylinders, perhaps special ready made Coil- or Sweep features? I enclose som examples of barrel cams in .JPG. Thanks in advance, Albert van der Vliet foxmotion@kpn-officedsl.nl

You can use a combination of 2d sketches where you can import xls file data as points. Then use 3D sketch tools to correctly wrap the path around the barel. Last, use a sweep with the barel surface as a guide surf. I have made several barel cams in this way. -kevin
