How long have you been using Inventor?
I have been using Inventor since early 2001. The first class that I took was taught using release 5.0.
What has been your most difficult design challenge, and how did you overcome it?
The greatest challenge that I probably faced was learning INV Pro 8.0 Pipe routing. I had to do this without instructor-led training and, in a matter of a few days, produce manufacturing drawings for hydraulic lines. I overcame simply by trial and error. I had 15 or 20 runs to model. The first one took more than a day and a half, and the last 10 or so took less than half a day.
If you could change one feature about Inventor, what would it be?
If I could add one thing to Inventor, it would be the ability to create custom view labels, section symbols, and detail symbols and then use them as default styles in the view tools. So many companies have their own conventions for these types of symbols. The sketch symbols tool allows for creation of these but it can be cumbersome and time consuming to use on large assemblies with multiple views. This is the most common complaint that I have heard in the years that I have used Inventor.
Which Inventor feature do you consider a must-have?
I guess I am following the crowd, but I just love the DWG TrueConnect.
What design advice would you offer to your peers?
The greatest advice that I can give to fellow designers is to model the way an item is to be manufactured. If doing a part, ask how is this going to be machined; if working on an assembly, ask how is this going to be put together.
As an active member of Autodesk's Manufacturing Community, which areas of the site are most helpful?
I think that the most valuable component of the Manufacturing Community site has got to be the discussion groups area. This area has solved most of the issues that I have run across and taught me about the advanced features of Inventor.
Can you tell us a little about yourself?
I've been in drafting and design since 1997. I have worked primarily in the manufacturing industries, including product flow, Aerospace, Government Defense, and transportation. My positions have included entry level drafter, designer, CAD Systems Administrator, and most recently MCAD Solutions Engineer for Hagerman & Company, Inc.
I am a husband and father of five children who range in age from 3 to 19, so "free time" is just a relative term in my home.View Kevin Bosch's Manufacturing Community Profile
