Poor Man's Data Management

Users of an Autodesk vertical such as Autodesk Inventor, AutoCAD Mechanical and AutoCAD Electrical receive Autodesk Vault as a companion. Those users can view, add, and modify data to Autodesk Vault. Autodesk Vault is the first tier in the data management family. This tier is strictly used for work in process data. If a non-vertical user, for example a purchasing agent, wishes to review data stored in vault he would want to invest in Autodesk Productstream. This software is the second tier of Autodesk's family of data management. Autodesk Productstream allows for designs to be complete, accurate, approved, managed and released in a timely and effective manner.

It also helps automate the release management process by managing engineering changes and bill of materials, while enabling Engineering control design data. But, if a company feels that they are not ready to move to Autodesk Productstream, there is another way to view the data in the vault. This is done with Autodesk Design Review and the DWF files that are created from Autodesk Vault. This can be done by having Vault export copies of DWF files to a file directory outside of the vault. Start by having the Administrator of the vault log into it and go to menu Tools>Administration. Here under DWF Attachments select the Define button. Under DWF Publish the Administrator can set the path of where the DWF files will be stored. The Administrator can set the publish options to either a flat list or have the DWF files stored to match the tree structure of the vault. Now every time a DWF file is created it will be published to the vault and to this file structure. Now that the DWF files are outside the vault anyone can view them with Autodesk Design Review. In addition to viewing them Autodesk Design Reviewer gives a user to do red line mark-ups. Then email the mark-ups to Engineering for review. Engineering can now make the necessary changes to the designs and start the process over.
